20dEncrypted Email Service Tuta Denies It's a 'Honeypot' for Five Eyes Intelligence - because of course they’d deny the obvious of what they are.
gizmodo.com
Encrypted email service Tuta denies being a "honeypot" operation for intelligence agencies, following allegations by a former Canadian intelligence official.
The official claimed Tuta was used as a "storefront" by law enforcement to lure criminals for surveillance.
Tuta vehemently denies the allegations and emphasizes its commitment to privacy and transparency.
The fact that there is room for any speculation, in my opinion, compromises the security and integrity of the service itself, simlilar to the scrutiny Protonmail fell under (another speculated NSA honeypot with money trails and funding to back that claim up).
Better alternatives (such as Skiff Mail) are shaping up to be more reliable, secure, and transparent with their operations. Protonmail and Tuatanota should actively be avoided; proper due diligence and independent research should arrive one who searches to that same conclusion.

Privacy Is A Human Right
Tutanota operates in a 14 eyes country whereas Proton is based in Switzerland which is fully independent from any spying agreements with other countries. If either is a honeypot, the answer is obvious.

And yet proton uses google services for push and has not all the apps open source. Tuta is at least on fdroid and don’t need google services installed. Not a fan of any email when it comes for privacy. But I used proton from almost day one as a visionary for the company and tried tuta and skiff as well. I like where skiff goes but don’t recommend any of the three for emails what are confidential. That said they are probably all 3 ok to use for the normal user.

Why people still use email for anything sensitive is beyond me

Agreed but almost every website and service need an email.
