I’ve been on a big #space kick recently. Discovered this today — some nice 3D animations of recent (and not so recent) NASA/JPL missions. I especially liked the Voyager ones — can’t believe Voyager is still sending data back almost 50 years later!

It is amazing! My father and his team built the cameras for the Voyagers (digital cameras in the 70s!), which were controversial to put on the spacecraft because they weren’t considered scientific instruments. He passed 15 years ago, but the spacecraft keep on trucking ✨ There’s a great documentary “It’s Quieter in the Twilight” about the team still operating them.

Can you imagine designing and building anything that operates for 50 years without any mechanical repairs or terminal breakages… and now outside the solar system?

Unimaginable. It’s quite a challenge for me to grasp the concept of creating hardware designed for longevity. This task seems to carry more weight than much of our current work. 😅 Working in tech and marketing offers a great advantage – the ability to quickly iterate and receive immediate user feedback. However, the downside is that the products or online content we develop can be as fleeting as our ever-shifting attention spans.

I went down the rabbit hole reading about how a cosmic bit flip (!) last year led us to lose touch with Voyager for months until we managed to get back in touch

So wild, what an expensive item to lose 😆 Glad we managed to reconnect with it 💪

Debugging 70s hardware with an RTT of 37 hours! A few years ago they had to update the only massive dish antenna that could communicate to Voyager 2, and so they were read-only for almost a year ➔ https://www.nasa.gov/centers-and-facilities/jpl/nasa-contacts-voyager-2-using-upgraded-deep-space-network-dish/

That’s super cool. The 3D interaction makes it easy to show my little ones how eclipses work :).
