Scientists at UC Davis have found a correlation between certain types of bacteria in the anal gland secretions of domestic cats and the synthesis of odorant molecules. Differences in bacterial markers were observed in the anuses of young and old cats, as well as obese cats and indoor cats, suggesting potential associations with natural changes and environmental factors. Further research is needed to fully understand the causal relationship between bacterial changes and scent communication in cats.
