“A new report shows that one-quarter of Americans have little to no confidence in scientists to act in the public's best interests.
Trust in scientists and positive views of science have continued to decline, with only 23% of respondents expressing the strongest level of trust in scientists, down from 39% in 2020.
Despite declines, 73% of U.S. adults still have a great deal or fair amount of confidence in scientists to act in the public's best interests, making them one of the most positively viewed groups compared to other professions.”
One of the challenges for scientists is that most people don’t understand that science is the pursuit of knowledge. It may or may not have a direct impact on society at the time the research is done. People want to see the direct benefits, which aren’t often apparent at the time the research is done. Also, many scientists are great communicators.
