16dF1 Las Vegas GP FP2 delayed due to manhole cover problem
us.motorsport.com
UPDATE 0037PST: the FIA has rescheduled FP2 for 0200PST, or in 1 hour and 23 minutes. No word if they’ll re-run (wassssaaaap!!) FP1 or if it’s been permanently canceled.
2 cars damaged via manhole cover.
Formula 1 cars weigh around 798kg, or just under 1800lbs.
With downforce generated over the top and through the Venturi tunnels, the car will generate as much as 3600lbs of total downforce, including the car (twice its weight in downforce/vacuum), at full speed.
The offending cover was pulled from the underlying concrete and asphalt… with the rim still welded to the cover. It was located on the Las Vegas Strip’s 3.8km back straight, where cars are reaching 230mph before the braking zone.
Carlos Sainz Jr. and Esteban Ocon’s chassis were totaled.
FP2 is indefinitely delayed until the FIA approves repairs to the track.
The stands are packed for free practice. It’s wild. During the delay, they played “Hollaback Girl” and it was clear people were getting frustrated as they all screamed “this shit is bananas! B-A-N-A-N-A-S”
